Ray Elementary LSC Meeting Notes for December 8, 2016

  • In Attendance: Fran Grossman, Silvia Ellis, Megan Kruis, Ronisha Preckwinkle, Anita Walker, Sonia Vergara, Andy Carter, Eleni Lemberis, Ramona Burress, Scott Shurtliff Meeting called to order at 6:10 pm.
  • Eleni Lemeris motioned to approve the agenda, Megan Kruis seconded the motion. The vote was unanimous to approve.
  • Ms Neely delivered the Principal’s report in Ms Thole’s absence. Items discussed include:
    • Progress update with regards to each area of the CIWP. o With regards to #4 Culture for Learning, Fran Grossman inquired about resources for parents to learn about better parenting techniques. Ms Neely agreed to follow up on this idea. o Scott Shurtliff inquired about what is the rationale for a 95% attendance achievement. Silvia Ellis explained attendance has an impact on the CPS rating received by the school.
  • Sonia Vergara provided an overview of the budget and requested approval for $2,013.54 Seminar, Fees, Subscriptions, and Professional Membership to be used for two teachers to attend the 2. 5 day Chicago ROAR training. o Andy Carter motioned to approve the budget request. Megan Kruis seconded the motion. The vote was unanimous to approve.
  • Andy Carter inquired if there is anything the LSC can do to help raise $10,000 to match an anonymous grant for improved science education. Silvia mentioned the PTO is working to solicit donations from the neighborhood.
  • Andy Carter mentioned the garden committee will be meeting the 12th of January at 12:00pm in room 202.
  • Silvia Ellis inquired about the departure of Mr. Walker from the discipline support staff who recently resigned. Ms Neely confirmed the administration is currently interviewing for the role.
  • Silvia Ellis raised concerns about the budget for the remainder of the year. Due to budget reductions, Ray has approximately $200,000 less money for the remainder of the year than had in previous years. Silvia is going to draft a letter to parents to inform them of the budget constraints and encourage parents to pay their student fees.
  • We discussed specific areas where we are not spending money due to budget reductions:
    • Full time security staff was cut and is not available to monitor. o Supplies will be low after January.
    • We can’t pay staff to manage after school programs.
  • Ronisha Preckwinkle inquired about the level of funds we receive from large corporations. Sonia Vergara confirmed we do receive funds from Target, Box Tops and other corporate programs. The PTO actively solicits these funds.
  • There were no requests for public comment.
  • The meeting was adjourned at 6:58pm.
